If you set the dots per inch (DPI) higher than 96, and you're running the Aero desktop experience, the text and other items on the screen might appear blurry in some programs that aren't designed for high–DPI display. To avoid this problem, follow these steps:

In the left pane, click Set custom text size (DPI). If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Ways to improve display quality

The appearance of your computer's display can be influenced by several factors. The monitor you use and its settings, how Windows is configured, and how you use your computer can all have an effect on display quality.

To ensure that your monitor is calibrated correctly, check the instructions that came with your monitor.

Trying to run too many programs at the same time can cause display problems such as jittery or choppy video. If you notice erratic or reduced visual performance on your computer, try one or more of the actions described below.

Even if you have only a few programs running, some programs (such as video-editing programs) and features (such as high-definition television) use a lot of system resources. Running too many of these programs at the same time puts a strain on system resources and might degrade display quality or make video appear jittery or disconnected.

On some computers, very high resolutions require a lot of system resources to display properly. If you notice problems at high resolutions, try lowering the resolution until the problems disappear.

You can use libraries to view and arrange files from different locations. There are four default libraries (Documents, Music, Pictures, and Videos), but you can also create new libraries for other collections.

Click the Start button , click your user name (which opens your personal folder), and then, in the left pane, click Libraries.
In Libraries, on the toolbar, click New library.
Type a name for the library, and then press Enter.

To copy, move, or save files to a library, you must first include a folder in the library so that the library knows where to store the files. This folder automatically becomes the default save location for the library. Compress and uncompress files (zip files)

Compressed files take up less storage space and can be transferred to other computers more quickly than uncompressed files. You can work with compressed files and folders in the same way that you work with uncompressed files and folders. You can also combine several files into a single compressed folder. This makes it easier to share a group of files.

To compress (or zip) a file or folder

Locate the file or folder that you want to compress.
Right-click the file or folder, point to Send to, and then click Compressed (zipped) folder.

A new compressed folder is created in the same location. To rename it, right-click the folder, click Rename, and then type the new name.

To extract (or unzip) files or folders from a compressed folder

Locate the compressed folder that you want to extract files or folders from.
Do one of the following:
- To extract a single file or folder, double-click the compressed folder to open it. Then, drag the file or folder from the compressed folder to a new location.
- To extract the entire contents of the compressed folder, right-click the folder, click Extract All, and then follow the instructions.

Notes

If you add encrypted files to a compressed folder, the files will be unencrypted when extracted, which might result in unintentional disclosure of personal or sensitive information. For that reason, you should avoid compressing encrypted files.

Some types of files, like JPEG pictures, are already highly compressed. If you compress several JPEG pictures into a folder, the total size of the folder will be about the same as the original collection of pictures. If you want to make pictures smaller to send in e‑mail, see Send pictures in e‑mail.

If you've already created a compressed folder and you want to add a new file or folder to it, drag the files that you want to add to the compressed folder.

Select multiple files or folders (Win7)

There are several ways to select multiple files or folders.

To select a consecutive group of files or folders, click the first item, press and hold down the Shift key, and then click the last item.
To select multiple files or folders that are near each other, drag the mouse pointer to create a selection around the outside of all the items that you want to include.
To select non-consecutive files or folders, press and hold down the Ctrl key, and then click each item that you want to select.
To select all of the files or folders in a window, on the toolbar, click Organize, and then click Select all. If you want to exclude one or more items from your selection, press and hold down the Ctrl key, and then click the items.
To select multiple files or folders by using check boxes:
1. Click to open Folder Options.
2. Click the View tab.
3. Select the Use check boxes to select items check box, and then click OK.

To clear a selection, click a blank area of the window.

Tip

After selecting files or folders, you can perform many common tasks, such as copying, deleting, renaming, printing, and compressing. Simply right-click the selected items, and then click the appropriate choice.

Install the hardware

Install network adapters in any computers that need them, or connect them to the computers. (Follow the installation instructions in the information that came with each adapter.)

Set up or verify an Internet connection (optional)

You don't need an Internet connection to set up a network, although most people want to use their network to share an Internet connection. To set up an Internet connection, you need a cable or DSL modem and an account with an Internet service provider (ISP). For more information, see What do I need to connect to the Internet?

If you already have an Internet connection, you just need to verify that the connection is working. To do that, open your web browser and go to a website that you don't usually visit. (If you go to a website that you visit often, some of its webpages might be stored on your computer and will display correctly even if your connection is faulty.) If the website opens and you don't get any error messages, your connection is working.

To share an Internet connection

You can share one Internet connection among two or more network computers. To do that, you can either use an intermediary device, which is a device located between the Internet connection and your computer, or set up Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). Your ISP might charge a fee for multiple Internet connections. Ask your ISP for information about this.

Use an intermediary device. You can use a router or a combined router and modem to share an Internet connection. If you use a router, connect it to both the modem and the computer with the Internet connection, and then verify your Internet connection again. The information that came with the router should include connection instructions. If you use a combined router and modem, plug it into any computer. Check the information that came with the device for more detailed connection instructions.

Note

The router and modem must be turned on to use the Internet connection from any of the computers on your network.

Set up ICS. If you want to share an Internet connection without using a router, you can set up ICS on the computer that's connected to the modem. That computer will need two network adapters: one to connect to the modem and one to connect to the other computer.

Setting up a home network

Before you start: To decide what type of network to set up or to find out what hardware and cables you need, see What you need to set up a home network. That topic has information about the different types of networks (also known as network technologies), as well as hardware requirements for each type.

Once you know what type of network you want, and you have the necessary hardware, there are four steps you might need to take:

Install any necessary hardware.
Set up an Internet connection (optional).
Connect the computers.
Run the Set Up a Network wizard (for wireless networks only).

Using a digital ID, you can digitally sign your e‑mail to prove your identity. You can also use a digital ID to encrypt messages, keeping them private.

What is a digital ID?

Digital IDs, also called certificates, allow recipients to verify that an e‑mail was actually sent by you. This is useful because it's easy to forge e‑mail return addresses. Also, when traveling across the Internet, standard e‑mail messages are the digital equivalent of postcards—they can be read, or even altered, along the way. Digital IDs can be used with some e‑mail programs to encrypt messages, hiding their content and indicating whether a message has been altered in transit to the recipient.

How do I get a digital ID?

In many businesses, your system administrator will provide you with a digital ID. For personal use, you'll need to get a digital ID from a certification authority (an organization or company that issues digital IDs).

What are the different Internet connection methods?

If you want to connect to the Internet, here are the options.

Wireless

Choose this if you have a wireless router or network, even if you also have a broadband connection. Also choose this if you're connecting to a hotspot.

Broadband (PPPoE)

Choose this if your computer is connected directly to a broadband modem (also called a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) or cable modem), and you have a Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) Internet account. With this type of account, you need to provide a user name and password to connect.

Note

If you want to connect a wireless network to the Internet with a broadband modem, choose the Wireless option.

Dial-up

Choose this if you have a modem but it's not a DSL or cable modem, or if you want to use Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) to connect your computer to the Internet.

The most common ways to connect to an ISP are by using a phone line (dial-up) or broadband connection (cable or DSL). E‑mail is a great way to keep in touch with other people. Unfortunately, it can also open your computer to security risks, computer viruses, and potentially malicious software if you're not careful about the messages and attachments that you open. Before opening any e‑mail message or attachment, be sure that you have an up-to-date antivirus program installed. The antivirus program should be configured to scan messages as they arrive (real-time), and to scan all types of file attachments.

Here are some questions you can ask yourself to help decide whether to open an e‑mail message or attachment.

Do you know the person who sent you the e‑mail message?

Have you received e‑mail from the sender before?

Were you expecting e‑mail from this sender?

Does the subject line or attachment file name make sense?

Note

Before you open any e‑mail that has an attachment, make sure that your antivirus program is up to date and that it's turned on (this allows it to scan attachments).

View programs running on your computer

You can use Task Manager to see a list of the programs that are currently running on your computer. If a program doesn't appear to be responding, use Task Manager to view the status of the program.

If a program isn't responding and you want to close it, click the program, and then click End Task. Any unsaved changes made using the program will be lost.

Tips for creating strong passwords and passphrases

A password is a string of characters used to access information or a computer. Passphrases are typically longer than passwords, for added security, and contain multiple words that create a phrase. Passwords and passphrases help prevent unauthorized people from accessing files, programs, and other resources. When you create a password or passphrase, you should make it strong, which means it's difficult to guess or crack. It's a good idea to use strong passwords on all user accounts on your computer. If you're using a workplace network, your network administrator might require you to use a strong password.

Note

In wireless networking, a Wi‑Fi Protected Access (WPA) security key supports the use of a passphrase. This passphrase is converted into a key that is used for encryption, which is not visible to you. Use a firewall

A firewall is software or hardware that checks information coming from the Internet or a network and then either turns it away or allows it to pass through to your computer, depending on your firewall settings. In this way, a firewall helps prevent hackers and malicious software from gaining access to your computer.

Windows Firewall is built into Windows and is turned on automatically.

If you run a program such as an instant messaging program or a multiplayer network game that needs to receive information from the Internet or a network, the firewall asks if you want to block or unblock (allow) the connection. If you choose to unblock the connection, Windows Firewall creates an exception so that the firewall won't bother you when that program needs to receive information in the future.

Use virus protection

Viruses, worms, and Trojan horses are programs created by hackers that use the Internet to infect vulnerable computers. Viruses and worms can replicate themselves from computer to computer, while Trojan horses enter a computer by hiding inside an apparently legitimate program, such as a screen saver. Destructive viruses, worms, and Trojan horses can erase information from your hard disk or completely disable your computer. Others don't cause direct damage, but worsen your computer's performance and stability.

Antivirus programs scan e‑mail and other files on your computer for viruses, worms, and Trojan horses. If one is found, the antivirus program either quarantines (isolates) it or deletes it entirely before it damages your computer and files.

Windows does not have a built-in antivirus program, but your computer manufacturer might have installed one. If not, go to the Windows 7 security software providers website to find an antivirus program.

Because new viruses are identified every day, it's important to select an antivirus program with an automatic update capability. When the antivirus software is updated, it adds new viruses to its list of viruses to check for, helping to protect your computer from new attacks. If the list of viruses is out of date, your computer is vulnerable to new threats. Updates usually require an annual subscription fee. Keep the subscription current to receive regular updates.

Warning

If you do not use antivirus software, you expose your computer to damage from malicious software. You also run the risk of spreading viruses to other computers.

Use spyware protection

Spyware is software that can display advertisements, collect information about you, or change settings on your computer, generally without appropriately obtaining your consent. For example, spyware can install unwanted toolbars, links, or favorites in your web browser, change your default home page, or display pop-up ads frequently. Some spyware displays no symptoms that you can detect, but it secretly collects sensitive information, such as the websites you visit or the text you type. Most spyware is installed through free software that you download, but in some cases simply visiting a website results in a spyware infection.

To help protect your computer from spyware, use an antispyware program. This version of Windows has a built-in antispyware program called Windows Defender, which is turned on by default. Windows Defender alerts you when spyware tries to install itself on your computer. It also can scan your computer for existing spyware and then remove it.

Because new spyware appears every day, Windows Defender must be regularly updated to detect and guard against the latest spyware threats. Windows Defender is updated as needed whenever you update Windows. For the highest level of protection, set Windows to install updates automatically.

Update Windows automatically

Microsoft regularly offers important updates to Windows that can help protect your computer against new viruses and other security threats. To ensure that you receive these updates as quickly as possible, turn on automatic updating. That way, you don't have to worry that critical fixes for Windows might be missing from your computer.

Updates are downloaded behind the scenes when you're connected to the Internet. The updates are installed at 3:00 A.M. unless you specify a different time. If you turn off your computer before then, you can install updates before shutting down. Otherwise, Windows will install them the next time you start your computer.

To turn on automatic updating

Open Windows Update. (Control Panel, Windows Update)
Click Change settings.
Make sure Install updates automatically (recommended) is selected. Windows will install important updates for your computer as they become available. Important updates provide significant benefits, such as improved security and reliability.
Under Recommended updates, make sure the Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates check box is selected, and then click OK. Recommended updates can address non-critical problems and help enhance your computing experience. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Connect a microphone, music player, or other audio device to your computer

You can connect a microphone, portable music player, or other audio device to your computer by using one of the jacks on the front, back, or side of your computer. These jacks directly connect to your computer's sound card or sound processor.

Most desktop computers have at least one line-in jack to connect a music player or other audio device and one line-out jack to connect speakers. These jacks typically appear on the back of a desktop computer. Many desktop computers also have a microphone jack, which is often on the front of the computer.

Most laptops don't have line-in or line-out jacks, but usually have microphone and headphone jacks located on the front or side of the laptop.

If you don't hear any sounds coming from an audio device you've plugged in to one of the jacks on your computer, check to make sure the jack is not muted. To do so, follow the instructions below.

Note

You can also plug most portable music players into a universal serial bus (USB) port on your computer instead of directly into your computer's sound card. If you do this instead of plugging the device into a jack, Windows will try to identify the device and install a driver for it. This allows you to use a music program or other software to sync music to the device.

Install a game controller

Direct memory access (DMA) is usually turned on by default for devices such as hard disks and CD or DVD drives that support DMA. However, you might need to turn on DMA manually if the device was improperly installed or if a system error occurred.

If you want to share your favorite digital pictures with others, you can send them as e‑mail message attachments. Make sure the pictures you want to share are on your computer, and then follow these steps.

Click to open the Pictures library.
Open the folder that contains the picture you want to send in e–mail, and then click the picture.

To select more than one picture, press and hold the Ctrl key while you click the pictures.
On the toolbar, click E‑mail.

This command only appears if an e‑mail program is installed on your computer.
In the Attach Files dialog box, select a picture size from the Picture size list, and then click Attach.

Windows opens a new e‑mail message and attaches your picture to the message using your preferred e‑mail program.
When you have finished writing the e‑mail message, click Send.

Notes

To send pictures as an attachment to an e‑mail message by using the steps in the procedure above, you need to have an e‑mail program installed on your computer.
It's a good idea to optimize your pictures for e‑mail by making them smaller before you send them so e‑mail systems don't stop them. Some e‑mail servers impose a limit of 1–2 megabytes (MB) per message. Optimizing your pictures for e‑mail doesn't affect the size or quality of the original pictures on your computer; it simply resizes the e‑mail versions. Pictures are automatically resized when you send pictures in e‑mail by using the steps in the procedure above.
If you want, you can drag picture files directly into an open e‑mail message. However, if you do it this way, you won't have the option to automatically make the picture files smaller.

Troubleshoot problems finding wireless networks

If your computer has a wireless network adapter, Windows will automatically detect wireless networks in range of your computer. You can see a list of wireless networks that Windows has detected in Connect to a Network.

Click Start, Connect To

If Windows does not detect a network that you think is in range of your computer, it could be because of one the following reasons:

1. Many mobile PCs have a wireless switch on the front or side of the computer. Check your computer for a switch. If you do have a switch, make sure it's turned on. Some computers also use a function key combination to turn the switch on or off. Check the information that came with your computer for details on locating the wireless switch.

2. With 802.11b or 802.11g routers and access points, the maximum range is up to 150 feet (46 meters) indoors and 300 feet (92 meters) outdoors. With 802.11a routers and access points, the maximum range is 50 feet (15 meters) indoors and 100 feet (30 meters) outdoors. These ranges are in optimal conditions with no interference. Make sure that your computer is within this range and as close as possible to the router or access point. If the computer is portable, try moving it around to determine the range of the wireless signal and the best place to put the computer.

If you are unable to get closer to the router or access point, you might want to consider buying and installing an external antenna to your wireless network adapter. Many wireless network adapters are set up so that you can attach an external antenna to them, which will provide you with better reception than the built-in antenna. Check the information that came with your wireless network adapter to see if you can install an additional antenna.

3. There are two things to try:

Make sure the router or access point is turned on and that the wireless signal light is illuminated.
Reset the router or access point by turning it off, waiting at least 10 seconds, and then turning it back on.

If you don't manage the access point or network, contact the network administrator.

Use Parental Controls to set limits on how your children use your computer, such as what games they play, how they use the Internet, and how long they can be online.

What can I control with Parental Controls?

You can use Parental Controls to set limits on the hours that children can use the computer, the types of games that they can play, the websites that they can visit, and the programs that they can run.

Set specific time limits on your children's computer use. You can set time limits to control when children are allowed to log on to the computer. Time limits prevent children from logging on during specified hours. You can set different logon hours for every day of the week. If they are logged on when their allotted time ends, they will be automatically logged off.
Prevent your children from playing games you don't want them to play. Control access to games, choose an age rating level, choose the types of content you want to block, and decide whether you want to allow or block specific games.

To quickly obtain the TCP/IP configuration of a computer, open Command Prompt, and then type ipconfig. From the display of the ipconfig command, ensure that the network adapter for the TCP/IP configuration you are testing is not in a Media disconnected state.
At the command prompt, ping the loopback address by typing ping 127.0.0.1.
Ping the IP address of the computer.
Ping the IP address of the default gateway.
If the ping command fails, verify that the default gateway IP address is correct and that the gateway (router) is operational.
Ping the IP address of a remote host (a host that is on a different subnet).
If the ping command fails, verify that the remote host IP address is correct, that the remote host is operational, and that all of the gateways (routers) between this computer and the remote host are operational.
Ping the IP address of the DNS server.

Notes

To open command prompt, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
If the ping command is not found or the command fails, you can use Event Viewer to check the System Log and look for problems reported by Setup or the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) service.
The ping command uses Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) Echo Request and Echo Reply messages. Packet filtering policies on routers, firewalls, or other types of security gateways might prevent the forwarding of this traffic.
The ipconfig command is the command-line equivalent to the winipcfg command, which is available in Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 98, and Windows 95. Windows XP does not include a graphical equivalent to the winipcfg command; however, you can get the equivalent functionality for viewing and renewing an IP address by opening Network Connections, right-clicking a network connection, clicking Status, and then clicking the Support tab.
Used without parameters, ipconfig displays the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway for all adapters.

When you try to use your modem, does it make any sounds?

If your modem is dialing, you should be able to hear it pick up the line, generate a dial tone, and dial like a touch tone phone.

If your modem makes dialing noises but does not connect correctly, your settings are probably incorrect. If it is not dialing, it may not be installed correctly.

If you hear a sound, but are not sure that it is your modem, or you do not think your modem makes any noise when it dials, click I do not know below.

Troubleshooting Scheduled TasksIf a scheduled task does not run when you expect it to, right-click the task, and then click Properties. On the Task tab, verify that the Enabled check box is selected. On the Schedule tab, verify that the schedule is set correctly.

If a task program does not run correctly, you might need to add command-line options to the path of the program. For more information about a particular program and its command-line options, try one of the following:

You can also check the Status column in the Scheduled Tasks window. The following table describes the status types.

For more information about the status of a scheduled task, you can check the SchedLgU.txt log file. You can use the log file to determine why a task might have stopped, or to check on the status of a task.

Notes

If you cannot run any scheduled tasks on your computer, and your computer is connected to a domain, see your system administrator to make sure that the Scheduled Tasks service is turned on.
If a user is not logged on at the time the task is scheduled to run, the task runs, but it will not be visible.

Problem when Printing

Important

The following procedure might require you to restart your computer, which will close this troubleshooter. If possible, view this troubleshooter on another computer while you perform the steps on the computer you are troubleshooting. If no other computer is available, write down the instructions on this page before you restart your computer.

After your computer restarts, reopen this troubleshooter and answer each question as you answered it initially. When you reach this page again, answer the question at the bottom, and then click Next.

If you cannot install your printer, it might be because you are trying to use a printer driver that is not compatible with Windows XP. For example, the drivers that were created for Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Millennium Edition (Me) are not compatible with Windows XP.

When you install your printer, try using one of the printer drivers that comes with Windows XP.

First, make sure that you do not have any old printer drivers installed, and then use the Add Printer Wizard to install a Windows XP driver.

To remove old printer drivers

Click Start, click Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Printers and Faxes.
If an icon for your printer appears in the Printers and Faxes folder, right-click the icon, click Delete, and then click Yes. If you do not see an icon, continue to the next step.
Close any programs that might be trying to use the printer.
Close any printer properties windows that are open, including the print queue window. Leave the Printers and Faxes window open.
On the File menu, click Server Properties, and then click the Drivers tab.
Under Installed printer drivers, look for any drivers that have the same name as the printer you are trying to install. If you see a driver for your printer, click it, click Remove, and then click Yes.

If you are unable to remove the driver, try the following:
- Close all open programs, and then try to delete the driver.
- Restart your computer, and then try to delete the driver.
If you still cannot delete the driver, contact your network administrator or a computer support professional for more assistance.
If more than one driver is installed for your printer, repeat step 6 for each driver.
Click Close to close the Print Server Properties window.

To install a Windows XP printer driver

In the Printers and Faxes folder, double-click Add Printer to start the Add Printer Wizard. Follow the instructions to complete the wizard, and use one of the following options to install a Windows XP driver:
- If your printer is Plug and Play, select the Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer check box at the beginning of the wizard.
- If your printer is not Plug and Play, select your manufacturer and printer from the lists in the wizard, and do not click Have Disk. This will cause your printer to be installed with one of the Windows XP printer drivers.
  If your printer is not listed in the Add Printer Wizard, check whether it is on the Windows Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) for Windows XP.
  
  Notes
  - If you do not have Web access, contact the manufacturer of your device to find out if it is compatible with Windows XP.
  Your printer might be listed here with a Windows XP-compatible driver that you can download and use to install your printer.
  
  If your printer is not listed, Microsoft cannot guarantee that it will work with Windows XP. However, you might be able to obtain an updated driver from the manufacturer of your printer that is compatible with Windows XP. Contact the manufacturer, or visit the manufacturer's Web site, for more information about updated drivers.

If you receive a message stating that your POP3 or SMTP host cannot be found, your Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) or Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) account information might be incorrect.

On the Mail tab, click the account that you were using when you received the message, and then click Properties.
On the Servers tab, make sure that the server settings include the correct full names of your servers, as provided to you by your Internet service provider (ISP).

If you are using Dr. Solomon's Anti-Virus Deluxe NetGuard

If this virus-protection program is configured to monitor files that are downloaded from the Internet, it creates new default e-mail and news accounts for Outlook Express. This might cause errors or prevent you from sending or receiving e-mail.

Contact Dr. Solomon to inquire about the availability of a fix for the problem.

You can work around the problem by setting your original e-mail and news accounts as the default accounts.

To make your original accounts the default accounts

On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
Click the Mail tab.

If the list includes an account named 127.0.0.1 that is followed by the word "default" in parentheses, your anti-virus program has created this account and made it your default account.
Click the account that you want to use as your default e-mail account, and then click Set as Default.
On the News tab, click the account that you want to use as your default news account, and then click Set as Default.
Click Close.
Quit Outlook Express, and then start it again.

If you have Norton AntiVirus 2000 installed

You might be able to solve this problem by correcting the server settings for your e-mail account.

To correct your server settings

On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
On the Mail tab, click your e-mail account, and then click Properties.
On the Servers tab, check if the incoming mail (Pop3) server is set to 127.0.0.1. If so, delete this and type the name or Internet Protocol (IP) address of your incoming e-mail server.

To determine the correct name or address to type, consult the configuration information provided to you by your Internet service provider (ISP).
Remove any information that is in the Account name box, and type the login name for your e-mail account.
Remove any information that is in the Password box, and type the password for your e-mail account.
Click OK, and then click Close.
Quit Outlook Express, and then start it again.

Address Book / Contact Missing - Part II

If Outlook Express automatically completes names you type in the To box when you are composing a message, but you do not see any contacts in the Address Book, the Wab32.dll file might be damaged.

A damaged Wab32.dll file can also cause you to receive one of the following messages when you try to send e-mail:

"Outlook Express: There was an error opening this message.
An error has occurred."

"The Address Book failed to load. Outlook Express is incorrectly configured, please re-install."

"The message could not be sent. Some of the recipients for this message are not valid. Please verify the names."

If you experience any of these symptoms, rename your old address book, replace the Wab32.dll file, and then import contacts from your old address book into a new one.

To rename your old address book

Close the Address Book and quit Outlook Express.
Click Start, click Search, and then click Other files or folders.
Under Look in, click the disk on which Windows is installed.
In the Name of file or folder box, type:
*.wab
Click More advanced options.
Select the Search system folders check box.
Select the Search hidden files and folders check box.
Click Search.
In the results list, right-click your Address Book file, click Rename, and then type:
old.wab
Press ENTER.
Right-click your Address Book file again and click Properties.
Make a note of the location of this file, which is shown in the General tab under Location.

If you cannot see the entire location, pause the mouse pointer over the part of the location you can see.

To replace the Wab32.dll file

Insert your Windows CD into the CD-ROM drive.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type:
msconfig
and then click OK.
On the General tab, click Expand File.
In File to restore, type:

Is the Microsoft Office spelling checker installed?

Outlook Express uses the spelling checker that comes with Microsoft Office.

If Office and its spelling checker are not installed, you cannot check spelling in Outlook Express. When you compose messages, the Spelling command on the Tools menu is not available.

Are you having trouble setting spelling options?

If the Options button is not available when you check the spelling in a message, set spelling options before you start a new message. These options will be used by default when you check any subsequent messages.

To set spelling options before you start a new message

On the Tools menu in the main Outlook Express window (rather than in the window where you compose a message), click Options.
On the Spelling tab, specify the options you want, click Apply, and then click OK.

If you receive a message when you check the spelling in messages, or when you send messages and the Always check spelling before sending check box in the Options dialog box is selected, some spelling checker files might be missing or damaged.

If you experience these symptoms, replace the Csapi3t1.dll file, and then remove and reinstall the Microsoft Office spelling checker.

To replace Csapi3t1.dll

Insert your Windows CD into the CD-ROM drive.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type:

Getting older programs to run on Windows XP

Most programs run properly on Windows XP. The exceptions are some older games and other programs that were written specifically for an earlier version of Windows. To run your program on Windows XP, try the following:

Run the Program Compatibility Wizard. As an alternative, you can set the compatibility properties manually.
Update your program, drivers, or hardware.

These options are covered in detail below.

The Program Compatibility Wizard

This wizard prompts you to test your program in different modes (environments) and with various settings. For example, if the program was originally designed to run on Windows 95, set the compatibility mode to Windows 95 and try running your program again. If successful, the program will start in that mode each time. The wizard also allows you to try different settings, such as switching the display to 256 colors and the screen resolution to 640 x 480 pixels.

If compatibility problems prevent you from installing a program on Windows XP, run the Program Compatibility Wizard on the setup file for the program. The file may be called Setup.exe or something similar, and is probably located on the Installation disc for the program.

To run the Program Compatibility Wizard

Start the Program Compatibility Wizard.
Follow the instructions in the wizard.

To start the Program Compatibility Wizard, click Start, click Help and Support, click Find compatible hardware and software for Windows XP, and then, under See Also in the navigation pane, click Program Compatibility Wizard.

Set the compatibility properties manually

As an alternative to running the Program Compatibility Wizard, you can set the compatibility properties for a program manually. The settings are the same as the options in the Program Compatibility Wizard.

To set the compatibility properties for a program manually

Right-click the program icon on your desktop or the shortcut on the Start menu for the program you want to run, and then click Properties.
Click the Compatibility tab, and change the compatibility settings for your program.

Notes

The Compatibility tab is only available for programs installed on your hard drive. Although you can run the Program Compatibility Wizard on programs or setup files on a CD-ROM or floppy disk, your changes will not remain in effect after you close the program.
For more information about an option on the Compatibility tab, right-click the option and then click What's This.

Update your program or drivers

If your program does not run correctly after testing it with the Program Compatibility Wizard, check the Web for updates or other fixes, as follows:

Check the Web site of the program's manufacturer to see if an update or patch is available.

Open Computer Management (Local).
In the console tree, right-click Computer Management (Local), and then select Properties.
On the Advanced tab, click Performance Options, and under Virtual memory, click Change.
In the Drive list, click the drive that contains the paging file you want to change.
Under Paging file size for selected drive, type a new paging file size in megabytes in the Initial Size (MB) or Maximum Size (MB) box, and then click Set.
If you decrease the size of either the minimum or maximum page file settings, you must restart your computer to see the effects of those changes. Increases generally do not require a restart.

You must be recognized as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group on your computer and on the computer you are managing to perform this task.

To remove a wireless network from the list of preferred networks, under Preferred networks, click the wireless network that you want to remove, and then click Remove.
To update the list of available networks that are within range of your computer, click Refresh.
To automatically connect to available networks that do not appear in the Preferred networks list, click Advanced, and then select the Automatically connect to non-preferred networks check box.

When you enable automatic wireless network configuration, you can connect to an existing wireless network, change wireless network connection settings, configure a new wireless network connection, and specify preferred wireless networks. You will be notified when new wireless networks are available. After you select a wireless network, your wireless network adapter will be automatically configured to match the settings of that network, and a network connection attempt will be made. - To use a different user name when the user name in the smart card or certificate is not the same as the user name in the domain to which you are logging on, select the Use a different user name for the connection check box.
To specify whether the computer should attempt authentication to the network if a user is not logged on and/or if the computer or user information is not available, do the following:
- To specify that the computer attempt authentication to the network if a user is not logged on, select the Authenticate as computer when computer information is available check box.
- To specify that the computer attempt authentication to the network if user information or computer information is not available, select the Authenticate as guest when user or computer information is unavailable check box. This check box is selected by default.

IEEE 802.1x authentication provides authenticated access to 802.11 wireless networks and to wired Ethernet networks. 802.1x minimizes wireless network security risks and uses standard security protocols, such as RADIUS. For more information about 802.1x and 802.11, see Related Topics.
To configure settings on the Authentication tab, you must be a member of the local Administrators group.

Once your screen resolution changes, you have 15 seconds to confirm the change. Click Yes to confirm the change; click No or do nothing to revert to your previous setting.

A higher screen resolution reduces the size of items on your screen and increases the relative space on your desktop.
You can switch your screen resolution temporarily to 640 X 480 if you have games or other programs that are set to run at that resolution. To switch, right-click the game or program (on the desktop or on the Start menu), and then click Properties. Click the Compatibility tab, and then select the Run in 640x480 screen resolution check box. Your display reverts to its default resolution when you close the program.
Your monitor and video adapter determine how much you can change your screen resolution. You may not be able to increase the resolution above a certain level.
Changes to screen resolution affect all users that log on to the computer.
Only the recommended screen resolutions are listed. For additional settings, click the Advanced button on the Settings tab, click the Adapter tab, and then click List all Modes. Select the resolution, color level, and refresh rate you want.

Protecting against viruses and Trojan horsesIn today's computing world, you must prevent intentional intrusions into your computer and network that take the form of viruses and Trojan horses. Follow these tips to help prevent virus outbreaks and Trojan horse attacks.

For users:

Educate yourself about viruses and how they are commonly spread. You can unwittingly bring viruses into the network by loading a program from a source such as the Internet, online bulletin board, or e-mail attachments.
Learn the common signs of viruses: unusual messages that appear on your screen, decreased system performance, missing data, and inability to access your hard drive. If you notice any of these problems on your computer, run your virus-detection software immediately to minimize the chances of losing data.
Programs on floppy disks may also contain viruses. Scan all floppy disks before copying or opening files from them, or starting your computer from them.
Have at least one commercial virus-detection program and use it regularly to check your computers for viruses. Be sure to obtain the latest virus signature files for your program when they are available, because new viruses are created every day.

For administrators:

Before putting a new program on the network, install it on a computer not attached to the network, and then check it with your virus-detection software. (Although it's advisable to log on to your computer as a member of the Users group, you should install the program while logged on as a member of the local Administrators group because not all programs install successfully when installed by a member of the Users group.)
Do not allow users to log on as members of the Administrators group on their own computers because viruses can do more damage if activated from an account with Administrator permissions. Users should log on as members of the Users group so that they will have only the permissions necessary to perform their tasks.
Require users to create strong passwords so that viruses cannot easily guess passwords and obtain Administrator permissions. (You can set password requirements using the Group Policy snap-in.) For information about creating strong passwords, click Related Topics.
Regularly back up files so that damage is minimized if a virus attack does occur.

The steps to perform this task differ depending on whether your computer is a member of a network domain or is part of a workgroup (or is a stand-alone computer).

The computer is on a domain

You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.

Open User Accounts in Control Panel.
On the Users tab, under Users for this computer, click the user account name, and then click Properties.
On the Group Membership tab, click the group you want, and then click OK.

Notes

You should not add a new user to the Administrators group unless the user will perform only administrative tasks. For more information, click Related Topics.
If you want a user to belong to more than one group, use Local Users and Groups. To open Local Users and Groups, in the User Accounts dialog box, on the Advanced tab, click the Advanced button. Double-click Groups, and then add the user to the groups you want.

The computer is not on a domain

You must have a computer administrator account on the computer to change another user's account type.

The steps to perform this task differ depending on whether your computer is a member of a network domain or is part of a workgroup (or is a stand-alone computer).

My computer is on a domain

Open User Accounts in Control Panel.
On the Users tab, click Add.
Follow the instructions on the screen to add a new user.

Notes

Add New User gives an existing domain user permission to use the computer.
You can only add existing domain users by using User Accounts. To add a new local user, on the Advanced tab, click the Advanced button. In Local Users and Groups, click Users, and then on the Action menu, click New User.
You should not add a new user to the Administrators group unless the user will perform only administrative tasks. For more information, click Related Topics.

My computer is not on a domain

You must have a computer administrator account on the computer to add a new user to the computer.

Open User Accounts in Control Panel.
Click Create a new account.
Type a name for the new user account, and then click Next.
Click Computer administrator or Limited, depending on the type of account you want to assign to the new user, and then click Create Account.

Notes

The name you assign to the account is the name that will appear on the Welcome screen and the Start menu.
The first user you add to the computer must be assigned a computer administrator account.

This option is only available for folders included in your user profile. Folders in your user profile include My Documents and its subfolders, Desktop, Start Menu, Cookies, and Favorites. If you do not make these folders private, they are available to everyone who uses your computer.
When you make a folder private, all of its subfolders are private as well. For example, when you make My Documents private, you also make My Music and My Pictures private. When you share a folder, you also share all of its subfolders unless you make them private.

Printers are not shared by default when you install them on Windows XP Home Edition, but you can choose to share any printer you install on your computer.
When you publish a printer in Active Directory, other users logged onto the Windows domain will be able to search for the printer based on its location and features such as how many pages it prints per minute and whether color printing is supported.

Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is the most popular network protocol, and the basis for the Internet. Its routing capabilities provide maximum flexibility in an enterprise-wide network. In Windows XP TCP/IP is automatically installed.

On a TCP/IP network, you must provide IP addresses to clients. Clients may also require a naming service or a method for name resolution. This section explains IP addressing and name resolution for Network Connections on TCP/IP networks. It also describes the FTP and Telnet tools that are provided by TCP/IP.

Assigning IP addresses to dial-up and virtual private network (VPN) connections

Each remote computer connecting to a remote access server on a Windows TCP/IP network is provided an IP address by the remote access server.

If you use a specific IP address, the remote access server must be configured to permit users to request a specific address.

Name resolution for network and dial-up connections

In addition to requiring an IP address, network and dial-up connections on a TCP/IP network may require a mechanism to map computer names to IP addresses. Four name resolution options are available: DNS, WINS, broadcast name resolution, and the Hosts and Lmhosts files.

In small networks where IP addresses do not change, network and dial-up connections can use a Hosts or Lmhosts file for name resolution. By using these files on the local drive, you do not need to transmit name resolution requests to a WINS or DNS server and wait for the response.

Internet tools

TCP/IP provides File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and Telnet. FTP is a character-based utility that permits you to connect to FTP servers and transfer files. Telnet is graphical application that lets you log in to remote computers and issue commands as if you were at the keyboard of the computer. Multiple variations of FTP, Telnet, and other programs based on earlier Internet standards are also available on the Internet or commercially.

All of these protocol services are classified as elective Internet standards and are defined and described in the specified Request for Comments (RFC) document listed in the table. For more information on these protocol services, see the RFCs.
Do not install Simple TCP/IP Services unless you specifically need this computer to support communication with other systems that use these protocol services.
After Simple TCP/IP Services are installed, you cannot enable or disable the separate services individually.

If you do not have Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) or Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) enabled, do not create a bridge between the public Internet connection and the private network connection or add the public Internet connection to an existing Network Bridge. To do so creates an unprotected link between your network and the Internet, and leaves your network vulnerable to intrusions.
Adapters that provide shared Internet connections, or connections that run ICF, cannot be part of the Network Bridge and will not appear under Adapters. Similarly, the Add to Bridge menu command is available only for adapters that you can add as connections to the Network Bridge.
To enable the Network Bridge there must be at least two adapters connected to the bridge.
Network adapters that previously appeared under LAN or High-Speed Internet, appear under Network Bridge when you add them as connections. Network adapters that provide Internet connectivity, such as DSL and cable mmodems cannot be bridged and always appear under LAN or High-Speed Internet.
Internet Connection Sharing, Internet Connection Firewall, Discovery and Control, and Network Bridge are not available on Windows XP 64-Bit Edition.

Only Ethernet, IEEE-1394 adapters, or Ethernet compatible adapters such as Wireless and home phoneline adapters (HPNA), can be part of the network bridge.
Do not create a bridge between the public Internet connection and the private network connection, or add the public Internet connection to an existing network bridge, if you do not have ICF or Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) enabled. To do so will create an unprotected link between your network and the Internet, and your network will be vulnerable to intrusions.
You can create only one network bridge on a computer, but the bridge can accommodate any number of network connections.
You cannot create a bridge connection on a computer running Windows 2000 or earlier versions of Windows.

Network bridges with wireless or IEEE-1394 connections support traffic using Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) only.

Right-click the camera, and then click Properties.
On the Events tab, in Select an event, click the event for which you want to initiate an action.
In Actions, click one of the following options:
- Start this program: Select the program you want to start when the event occurs.
- Prompt for which program to run: Select to be prompted to choose a program when the event occurs.
- Take no action: When the selected event occurs, nothing will be started.
- Save all pictures to this folder: All the pictures you select will be saved to the folder you specify when the event occurs. To search for a specific folder or drive, click Browse.
Click OK.

Notes

To open Scanners and Cameras, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Scanners and Cameras.
If the Events tab is not displayed, this feature is not available for the selected device.
Some programs do not support linking to digital cameras. Linking is available only with the programs that appear in Start this program.

To install a non-Plug and Play device

Attach the non-Plug and Play device to your computer.
Open Add Hardware in Control Panel.
In the Add Hardware Wizard, click Next.
Click Add a new hardware device, and then click Next.
Do one of the following:
- Click Search for and install the hardware automatically (Recommended) if you want Windows to try to detect the new non-Plug and Play device you want to install.
- Click Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced) if you know the type and model of the device you are installing and you want to select it from a list of devices.
Click Next, and then follow the instructions on your screen.

Notes

To open the Add Hardware Wizard, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add Hardware.
You may need administrative privileges to add and set up a Plug and Play device. You need administrative privileges if installing the device requires a user interface or if you experience errors during the installation process.

Install a device

To install a device

Most devices manufactured since 1995 are Plug and Play. This means that you should be able to attach a device to your computer and begin using it right away, without having to configure it or install additional software. If you are using an older device, or if the procedure below doesn't work, your device may be non-Plug and Play.

Connect the device to the appropriate port or slot on your computer, according to the device manufacturer's instructions.
Windows may prompt you to restart your computer, or the device manufacturer's instructions may ask you to restart your computer.

Notes

If you need to install a device, such as a sound card, into a slot inside your computer, shut down Windows and turn off the computer. Remove the computer cover and install the device in the appropriate slot. Replace the computer cover, and then turn on the computer.
If the device is a small computer system interface (SCSI) device, connect it to the SCSI port on your computer according to the device manufacturer's instructions. Restart or turn on your computer.
You need to be sure that the device number for the SCSI device is not used by another SCSI device. To change the device number, see the device manufacturer's instructions.
If the device is a universal serial bus (USB) or IEEE 1394 device, plug it into any USB or IEEE port on your computer. If prompted, follow the instructions that appear on your screen. Typically, USB ports look like this:
You do not need to shut down or turn off your computer when you install or plug in a USB or IEEE 1394 device. Although USB and IEEE 1394 are similar technologies, you cannot interchange USB connections with IEEE 1394 connections.
